Asking for gifts without diminishing oneself
The gift in the live performance is not alms: it's the way the room supports the artist it has chosen. How to ask with dignity.
Many people sing well and don't make money because they're ashamed to ask. And when they ask, they do it wrong: with blackmail, with excuses, with the face of someone who's bothering others.
The house rule: explain what it's for, thank, and never diminish yourself. "This gift pays for the next song I'm going to record" is a request. "Sorry to ask, but…" is a shame disguised as a request.
